MY SHOWS ON SHADY PINES RADIO

Shady Pines Radio is Portland's favourite community radio, started in 2020 by Callie and Brian and their friends to keep the music scene going despite covid lockdowns. The schedule now gathers close to 100 shows and as many personally engaged DJs sharing all sorts of music with enthusiasm.

I started with a show about classical music, the "Classical Curiosity Cabinet", a show that was not meant for the specialists, but for the explorers: each week, I'd choose a random theme that allowed me to put together (mostly) classical pieces, like you would gather on a shelf a glittery stone, the scull of a bird, and an old night train ticket to Rome. Every theme brought up symbols, stories, facts and memories, and with them musical pieces from diverse styles, times and places, some famous, some less. So I hoped to bring to the listeners some music they had never heard before, and maybe they would want to dig into more. I personally learned and discovered so much while preparing this show: not a single show was built only with music I knew before. We all have our comfort zones, don't we?

Then in December I started a second show, featuring French music, in the widest sense of French and of music. It was called "French Connexion", and the idea behind this show was following: every week, I'd send out one song into my network of French friends and family, and they'd send back other songs as a response. With these songs I built a playlist of "100% authentic French music" - the music French people actually listen to. This show didn't take itself too seriously, but hopefully brought to the ears of the radio's American listeners some music they had never heard before.
